I Might Be a Mermaid

Something strange happens when I slip into water
It doesn't matter whether I am gliding through a chlorinated pool
Families having fun with their noodles and floats
High pitched squeals of childish energy and joy
Or walking the surf line as the waves roll in
The salt tang filling my nose and cleansing my soul
A kind of calm washes over me
My mind becomes both more clear and yet more distant
Thoughts roll in like the waves or glide along with me
And a peaceful joy fills me up
